Biography
Dr. B.V.S. Viswanadham is the Institute Chair Professor and a distinguished professor of Geotechnical Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in Mumbai. His educational journey began with a B.E. from Andhra University (1987), followed by an M.Tech from IIT Madras (1989), and culminated in a Dr.-Ing. from Ruhr University Bochum, Germany (1996). Over the years, he has built a reputation for research in areas such as centrifuge modelling of geotechnical systems, environmental geotechnics, soil reinforcement, slope stabilization, and the utilization of waste materials in geotechnical applications. He also actively explores the design and performance of containment systems and the engineering of ground improvement schemes. Before his current role, he served in various academic and research positions: starting as a Scientist at the Central Road Research Institute in New Delhi, then joining IIT Bombay as an Assistant Professor in 1998, rising through Associate Professor to full Professor, and later taking on the Institute Chair role. He has also held administrative leadership roles at IIT Bombay, including serving as Dean of Infrastructure, Planning and Support, and Associate Dean. Beyond his institutional roles, Dr. Viswanadham’s contributions have been recognized across the geotechnical community through awards (such as the IGS-A.V. Shroff Prize, among others) and service in professional committees.
